It’s Autumn already so we thought it was the perfect time to share some simple tips to help you build strong little immune systems in preparation for the colder months ahead.
Babies and children are often more susceptible to picking up bugs and viruses, especially from day care and school. There are many things you can do however to help support and boost their immunity and to reduce their number of ‘sick days’ during the year.
NOURISH:
1. Make sure your little ones are eating plenty of healthy fresh whole foods, vegetables, fruit etc each day, they’re a great source of important vitamins, minerals, fibre and many nutrients which nourish the body and gut. Good fats (or essential fatty acids) such as those found in flaxseed oil, good quality fish or cod liver oil are also very important for immune health.
2. Limit their intake of processed foods, sugar, and foods which are full of preservatives, colours and chemicals. These foods actually make the body work harder on its’ daily mission to keep itself healthy. A lot of children these days have compromised gut health already, so it’s really important to avoid the highly processed sugary food when you can as it’s often detrimental to their beneficial gut flora.
3. Ensure children get plenty of sleep, plenty of fresh air, play and exercise each day. Happy healthy kids often have naturally stronger immune systems!
SUPPORT:
Probiotics – nourish the gut with healthy bacteria. 70% of our immune cells actually line our gut, so it makes sense to ensure we keep it healthy. Taking quality Probiotic bacteria has been scientifically proven to boost immunity and increase resistance to bugs. These are especially beneficial for children who pick up everything that’s going around, and they also help maintain a healthy immune system all year round. There are some great baby and children’s’ probiotic supplements available.
2. Vitamin C, Vitamin D & Zinc– these are essential nutrients which our bodies use to produce immune cells every day. They are very important in your children’s diet when it comes to boosting immunity, or you could even consider using a supplement, as this will work faster if you have a child who is always off school sick.
Vitamin C helps to fight off infection in the body, it is a valuable antioxidant, helps to reduce inflammation and also helps to prevent a virus from replicating. Vitamin C is known to help reduce the duration of respiratory infections and it can be taken as a preventative to help build immunity & resistance to colds. It is water soluble and is not able to be stored in the body, so it does need to be taken regularly, (especially if infection is present) as the body will burn it up faster.
Zinc greatly enhances immune function, fights infection, and it also helps to stop a virus from replicating.
Vitamin D3 is often found to be deficient in children (& adults) who are constantly sick and run down. It is crucial for healthy immune function, bone health and a happy mood also.
3.
Vitamin A – supports the health of mucous membranes as one of our immune systems first lines of defence against bugs. One of the best sources of this fantastic vitamin to help support immunity for kids is our Grand Parents favourite – Cod Liver Oil! “Yum” I hear you say, - well there are actually some great tasting quality cod liver oils that kids love...
4. Multi Vitamins & Minerals – these can be particularly useful supplements for children, as many of them at some stage or another can be very picky eaters. This means it can be very difficult to get the right nourishing foods into them when they need it the most! A multi vitamin & mineral supplement will contain all the necessary nutrients to maintain optimal health and support stronger little immune systems.
5. Herbal Immune Support – a number of immune boosting and infection fighting herbs are available in children’s formulas, and these provide specific antimicrobial and antiviral action to actively fight bugs and viruses during the ‘cold and flu season’. These include echinacea, olive leaf, astragalus and elderberry to name a few. They can be taken daily to help prevent your child from getting sick, and also to help speed recovery.
