About 30 – 40 per cent of the general population suffers from allergies of some kind. Some develop problems before the age of 10, and many people will experience symptoms for more than four months per year.
These symptoms are often fairly debilitating and can really sap your energy levels, often leaving you feeling washed out and exhausted. Reducing exposure to known allergens is ideal, but not always practical or possible, so listed below are some excellent natural options that can provide non drowsy symptom relief for you and your family.
Nutritional:
Apple Cider Vinegar – or ACV, is used by many for a multitude of health benefits, one of which is helping to keep allergic symptoms at bay. According to some natural health practitioners it is just as effective as over the counter medications, and it has many beneficial side effects!
It’s important to get raw unrefined and unpasteurised ACV which includes “The Mother”; the brown cloudy substance which settles at the bottom of the bottle. This is said to contain the wonderful curative powers in ACV being nutrient, enzyme and beneficial bacteria rich. Start with 1 teaspoon daily, either as a straight shot if you dare, or in a little warm water.
Quercetin – a natural bioflavonoid which helps to reduce inflammation and excess mucous production by helping reduce histamine release in the body; take daily throughout the allergy season, it can provide both treatment and prevention.
Vitamin C – supports overall immunity and resistance, and can help reduce histamine levels.
Probiotics – provide potent support for immunity via the gut, and some strains are specific for helping relieve allergy symptoms. Strong gut health can have a big impact when it comes to allergies. An allergic response is a result of an imbalance in the immune system and approximately 70% of our bodies’ immune cells are found lining the gut, so it's really common sense to do all we can to nourish our good gut bacteria.
Glutamine – an amino acid which plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy gut by maintaining intestinal tissue integrity, especially where there are gut problems such as leaky gut, - allergies, candida, irritable bowel, Crohn’s disease etc.
Homoeopathic:
Oral Allergy Spray – use throughout the typical allergy season twice a day. Supports the natural immune response to allergens from food, plants, clothing, chemicals and insect bites and stings.
Nasal Spray – Heels Luffa Compositum is an excellent nasal spray to treat hayfever and allergic rhinitis, while a saline and xylitol nasal spray helps to wash the nasal passages and limit an allergic response to inhaled allergens.
Herbal:
There are many wonderful herbs to consider using to help relieve symptoms and to support the immune system while it is dealing with seasonal allergies. You may like to visit your Natural Health Practitioner to have a formula made up specifically for you.
A few common herbs used in supplements to treat allergy symptoms follow: Garlic, Horseradish, Fenugreek, Perilla, Baical Skullcap, Eyebright, Echinacea.
Many of these combinations will help to decongest the nasal passages effectively, and together with a gentle nasal spray, help reduce irritation to mucous membranes.
Finally, please note that if your allergy symptoms are concerning you in any way always seek medical attention.
