Sports and exercise Nutritionist Marewa Sutherland gives us the low down of all things electrolytes (also known as mineral salts). These are found in our bodies cells in small but important amounts and ratios to enable muscle movement. They have a vital role in exercise as they literally allow the body to function and ultimately move. We loose electrolytes when we sweat so its super important we relace them to avoid cramp and fatigue symptoms.
If you are exercising for over 60-90 minutes or in hot and humid conditions then you should consider electrolyte replacement. This is because key salts such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium are being lost in sweat, which along with the fluid volume of sweat will begin to dehydrate to body.
The
PeakFuel Isotonic Sports Drink range is designed to replace these key electrolytes and also provide quick absorbing carbohydrate which fuels muscles during exercise. This combination of ingredients also help to hydrate you quickly by helping your body absorb the fluids you drink at a faster rate than water alone. Another bonus of staying hydrated is that your body stays cooler which helps prevent symptoms of fatigue, supporting your ability to exercise at higher intensity for longer.
Just cruising? Even low intensity exercise means the loss of electrolytes so be aware of a condition called Hyponatraemia where the sodium levels in your body are diluted to dangerously low levels usually by drinking large amounts of water and not replacing electrolytes. Symptoms include nausea, confusion and headaches.
Quick tip: Ensure that you make up your sports drink as per the instructions as this is the optimal concentration for fast absorption which means quicker hydration and muscle fuel while also a lower risk of stomach upset.
