Could your Migraines be a sign of something more serious?

Migraines are awful. I used to suffer from them when I was a teen. They would belt down on me and I couldn’t stand noise, light or even movement for a minimum of 12hours. I would inevitably give in to taking some form of hard pain-killers or a suppository, which managed to alleviate the nausea problem, all in one go. They seemed to come out of nowhere and I would often feel like a victim to them.
Eventually, I figured out that there was a pattern to my migraines. This was somewhat of a relief because it meant that I could plan for them! What I didn’t realise at the time, was that the pattern closely represented my menstrual cycle and the fluctuations in my hormone levels.
After years of frustrating and often debilitating Migraines, a friend of mine suggested Maca. It is a root plant that grows in the mountains of Peru and it focuses on balancing our hormones. I listened and did as I was told as nothing could be more unbearable than these nasty migraines.
It worked! I had been taking Maca for 3months and didn’t have a single migraine in the last month!
What I didn’t know at the time was why it worked!
Maca will regulate all our hormones and one of them is Oestrogen. Migraines are directly linked to Oestrogen Dominance. This is a condition many women suffer from these days due to the high pollution in our atmosphere and even our foods. We ingest a large volume of toxins, which are often converted by the body into Xenoestrogens. These play havoc on our natural hormonal balance. To compound the effects, we often add other non natural hormonal treatments into our bodies, such as the Contraceptive Pill.
Many women are Oestrogen Dominant and they don’t even realise it or consider that it is an imbalance that could cause many more health implications down the track. PMS, headaches, bloating, moodiness, inability to lose weight and of course, migraines are all symptoms of Oestrogen Dominance. If we ignore these tell, tell signs Oestrogen Dominance can lead to growths within the body that shouldn’t occur, such as breast cancers, tumours and cysts. Endometriosis is one of the conditions that is directly attributed to Oestrogen Dominance.
In some cases Maca will not be sufficient to get the hormonal balance back. Often times a good Liver Flush is required or a healing program with a Naturopath, which focuses on rectifying your hormonal balance.
Take your migraines as a sign. Not just of a migraine that causes you pain but as a sign of an underlying problem that you can sort out, before it develops into something more serious.
